Groundbreaking Ceremony

In a momentous event that signifies a giant leap forward for education in Northampton County, Northampton County Public Schools held its official groundbreaking ceremony for the construction and renovation of the new Middle School and High School complex today, March 6th, 2024.

The ceremony commenced with opening remarks from Dr. Martin, welcoming esteemed guests, community members, parents, and students who gathered to witness this historic occasion. Among the distinguished attendees were Board of Supervisors Members Betsy Mapp, Oliver Bennett, John Coker, Dixon Leatherbury, and Ernest Smith, along with School Board Members Liz Jones, Helene Doughty, Betty Borden, Jill Bieri, Joseph Andrews, Ian Brenson, and Jo Ann Molera.

The ceremony focused not just on laying the groundwork for physical structures but on building dreams and opportunities for future generations. Dr. Martin expressed gratitude to Woolpert, Inc., the architectural firm shaping the vision, and M.B. Kahn Construction Company, Inc., the dedicated hands bringing this vision to life.

The student performances by NMS/NHS Band and Chorus added a touch of creativity and talent to the event, showcasing the incredible abilities of Northampton County's students.

The ceremony proceeded with insightful remarks from key figures who played crucial roles in bringing this vision to life. Liz Jones, the dedicated School Board Chair, and Betsy Mapp, the current Chair of the Northampton County Board of Supervisors, addressed the audience, emphasizing the community's commitment to education. John Coker, the Board of Supervisors Chair at the time of project approval, also spoke about the multi-year journey to get to the Groundbreaking today. Maureen McElfresh, Project Manager with Woolpert, and Keith Hathaway, representing MB Khan Construction, provided insights into the creative and construction aspects of the project.

The groundbreaking ceremony, symbolizing the commencement of construction, involved three groups representing collaborative efforts in the past, present, and future. Dr. Martin invited the School Board and Board of Supervisors, School Staff, County Staff, Project Team Members, and Student Representatives to participate in this symbolic act.
